Patterns are in for 2018! Trends for this year include tiles containing decorative designs. Some of the more desired looks can be described with the word “encaustic”. This term goes back to the 1850’s where it was used to describe the method used to make the tile. While very few of the tiles available today are created using the original process, they are still inspired by the designs of that era.

Encaustic Cement Tiles

Often hand painted and made as a special-order according to specifications, these are the most authentic to the originals from the 1850’s. The subtleties of colour create a softer overall look than the porcelain counterparts. 

The uniqueness of these tiles come at a bit of a price. The maintenance is higher for these tiles; they require many coats of sealer upon installation, additional coats for upkeep over time and should be cleaned with specialty cleaners. Encaustic cement tiles start at around $20.00 per square foot.

Porcelain Tiles

Tile designers have become increasingly adept at recreating the original looks of encaustic cement tiles in porcelain.  While you may not get all the unique subtleties and artistic elements of the original, you benefit from a lower price point and ease of maintenance.  Cleaning of porcelain tiles is a breeze and generally a sealing coat is not required.  Porcelain tiles begin as low as $3.00 per square foot.
